Swansea art trail unveils spectacular castle sculpture inspired by coastal beauty

With the Castles in the Sky art trail just two months away, we are excited to reveal one of the incredible castles that will be on show at the free family event.

‘Beside The Swansea-Side’, by renowned Welsh illustrator Matt Joyce, is a colourful and playful representation of the seaside and promises to capture the hearts and imaginations of passersby.

Matt, who was born and raised in Cardiff, said: “The Welsh coast is one of my favourite places, whether I’m getting into the sea, walking my dog, or enjoying an ice cream.

“This bold and colourful design reflects my love for the coastline, from the rugged cliffs to the sandy beaches, and the vibrant wildlife that calls it home. I hope to evoke fond memories of seaside adventures for anyone who sees it.”

Matt’s illustrations mix bold lines and bright colours with humour and playful aesthetic. His work can be found on walls, packaging, clothing, cards and magazines.

The seaside-themed castle will be situated on Mumbles promenade next to Verdi’s Café and offers a captivating blend of coastal charm and artistic allure. With its playful designs evoking the fun of the seaside, it beckons visitors to pause and immerse themselves in its spellbinding beauty.

The 10-metre-high castle sculpture has been sponsored by Llansamlet-based commercial insurance broker, Compare Insurance Ltd, who fell in love with the brightly coloured and fun seaside design, which complimented Verdi’s seafront location.

Mark Thomas, CEO of Compare Insurance Ltd, said: “With the location of the castle near the sea in Mumbles we wanted something bright that would catch people’s attention.

“You can see the backdrop of Oystermouth Castle behind it and the fact that it has an ice cream on it while situated next to Verdi’s seemed the perfect fit!

“We are really excited to see the castle when it is installed as well as all the other beautifully illustrated castles.”

Compare Insurance Ltd, launched in 2009, and since then has been a thriving business in the UK SME market, developing valued relationships and partnerships with the UK’s leading insurers to make sure their clients receive the most competitive premiums with correct cover levels tailored to each client’s business needs.

The business has pledged to spend the next year raising money for the Wales Air Ambulance and is planning a series of fundraising events, including coffee mornings, muddy assault courses, marathons, and auctions to name a few.

Mark said: “The Wales Air Ambulance is an incredible charity that provides an essential service to the people of Wales. We are a Swansea-based company and the opportunity to support the initiative that places art all over the city as well as providing an activity for families to participate was something that we were keen to be involved with.”

The Castles in the Sky event will take place from 6 July to 15 September and will see over 30 castles dotted around the city as part of the trail. Following the event, the castles will be auctioned off to the highest bidder with proceeds going to the lifesaving charity.
